Les A. Murray (1962)

Cliffs think eternity

In stone,

Sheep fear, resignedly

It’s bone.

Blood knows eternity

Is perfect red

Lions bear it to the hint

Within their tread.

The snake knows it is coiled

Because he knows—

I am less wise than he

I just suppose.

Saints take eternity

For guide,

And earth approaches it

As bride.
