1978
1978 is one of three creative journals produced by the Sydney Arts Students’ Society (SASS). It is autonomously written, edited, and designed by members of the USYD community who are women and/or queer.
The journal is named after the first Sydney Mardi Gras, which occurred on June 24 1978. During the march, protesters were brutalised and arrested, and two days later, the Sydney Morning Herald published the names, addresses and occupations of 53 arrested protesters. In SASS’ 1978, LGBTQ+ individuals control the publication of their stories, which was not always possible in Sydney.
USYD students, staff and alumni are encouraged to contribute to and edit for 1978. The journal accepts fiction, nonfiction, poetry, visual arts, and more. If you are interested in participating, please get in touch with publications@usydarts.com
